School Zones
WATCH FOR ME
IN SCHOOL ZONES
It’s important to understand the rules surrounding school zones and how the laws differ from one area to another, including speed limits during school hours to ensure the safety of students. Additionally, being aware of the various traffic signs and signals and the presence of school buses can help foster a safer environment for everyone involved.
SAFETY TIPS FOR DRIVERS, BICYCLISTS, & PEDESTRIANS
-
In most school zones, the speed reduces to 25mph, possibly 15mph in specific areas. The enforcement of school zone speed limits varies depending on the specific regulations in place, with some zones requiring reduced speeds only when flashing lights are active, during specified hours, or when children are present. Additionally, speeding in an active school zone may result in doubled fines.
-
You must stop for a school bus that has stopped and has its red lights flashing when traveling in the same direction as the bus, regardless of the number of lanes. Additionally, you must stop when traveling in the opposite direction on an undivided roadway without a median or barrier separating the lanes. (Oklahoma Driver Manual 2023 – Page 30. Law: 47 OK Stat § 11-705 (2022))
